What is Vinaigrette?

Vinaigrette is a salad dressing that is prepared by mixing Extra Virgin Olive Oil with acidic ingredients like vinegar.

Fruits like lemon, basil, strawberry et al can be added to it to give it a unique flavor. Its flavors can be enhanced by adding a dash of salt and pepper.

Being a salad lover, it was obvious for me to try such dressings and some of my tested, delicious recipes include Basil Vinaigrette, Balsamic Vinaigrette, and this delicious Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette.

Guess what? All of them are lip-smacking!

How long does it last?

It’s best to make this dressing fresh. You can refrigerate it for a maximum of 3 days if you made an excess of it.

What does it taste like?

Strawberry Vinaigrette has a very interesting flavour profile. It is slightly sweet and tart from the strawberries, acidic from the balsamic vinegar and there is a hint of salt balancing out the whole thing.

It’s a perfect dressing to go with any salad.

How to make it from Jam?

When fresh strawberries are not available and you feel like making this vinaigrette, just add 2 tbsp of strawberry jam in place of strawberries and skip the honey.

Keep the rest of the process the same and you will get a great vinaigrette in no time.

Don’t Fear the Balsamic Vinegar

I was unsure of this strawberry vinaigrette recipe in the beginning. Many of the recipes I searched online used balsamic vinegar, and at first it was a bit strong and overpowering.

However, after several tweaks to this recipe, this strawberry vinaigrette balances out to a perfect sweet and savory flavor.

Macerate the Strawberries

Blending the sliced strawberries with the vinegar and honey helps extract the liquid from the berries. This process is called maceration and helps to draw out sweet syrupy juices from the strawberries and infuses the berries with flavor.

The strawberries in this recipe help to bind the ingredients together into a thick, almost creamy consistency that coats the leafy greens rather than trickling off.

Adjust Seasoning to Taste

Once your ingredients are blended, dip a salad green into the dressing and taste. If the flavor is too tart, add some extra honey. If the flavor is too sweet, add a dash of vinegar.

How do you dress up strawberries?

Mix a small amount of light brown sugar into several tablespoons of sour cream. My proportions are 1 teaspoon of light brown sugar to 3 tablespoons of sour cream. If you prefer a sweeter mixture, add a bit more sugar. Dip the small end of a strawberry into the mixture.

How To Serve?

This strawberry salad dressing has several uses that work well:

  • It is the classic dressing choice for a strawberry and spinach salad (sliced strawberries, spinach, red onion, nuts, and dairy or Vegan feta cheese) or this strawberry kale salad. It also pairs well with kale and other leafy greens including chard, collards, chicory, etc.
  • This could also pair wonderfully with salads like this Quinoa & Avocado Salad (feel free to swap the apples for strawberries instead).
  • You could also use it to drizzle over fresh, sweet fruit dishes and mixed fruit salads

Do you pour oil or vinegar first?

Tossing a salad with a fully emulsified vinaigrette is the only way to ensure that greens keep their crisp texture. But if you prefer to add oil and vinegar separately, introduce the vinegar first, followed by the oil.
