This is a super simple recipe that’s delicious on its own, but also has a lot of different possibilities! Here are some ideas for recipe variations… feel free to share your own ideas in the comments!

  • Use purple cabbage in place of green cabbage
  • Substitute vidalia onion for a sweeter flavor
  • Use flavored bacon from the deli – there are so many fun options that will add another level of flavor!
  • Substitute chicken or vegetable broth for the beef broth
  • Substitute Guinness or your other favorite beer for the beef broth
  • Add a touch of spice with cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes
  • Sprinkle in some caraway seeds for an extra dose of Irish flavor
  • Add fresh squeezed lemon juice for a touch of citrus
  • Sprinkle with parmesan cheese just before removing it from the heat

How Long Does it Take to Fry Cabbage?

Depends on the size of the pan, the amount cabbage you use and what else is in the pan. Cabbage cooks best when it is cooked on medium heat, and how tender you want it is a personal preference. The longer and slower you cook it, the more tender and sweet it will become.

To soften it slowly, it takes about 20 minutes. But, a quick stir fry style will take only 10 minutes or so! Experiment and have fun with it.

3 slices bacon, cut into thirds
⅓ cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
1 head cabbage, cored and sliced
1 white onion, chopped
1 pinch white sugar


  1. Place the bacon and vegetable oil into a large pot over medium heat. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until bacon is crisp. Add cabbage, onion, and sugar to the pot; cook and stir continuously for 5 minutes, until tender.
